Evening Showcase Artist
DIANITA
I'm a traditional artist born in Veracruz, Mexico and I've been living in Allen, TX for 7 years. I go by Dianita as my artist name.
I don't have formal art studies. My background is in Engineering. My first focused art studies were in Spring of 2019 with Donato Giancola through SmArt School and returned for Spring and Fall of 2020.
Fantasy art has become the perfect language to express all that lives in my heart and mind. In 2018 I was selected to be part of the Mexicanx Initiative, curated by John Picacio in an effort to bring Mexican and Mexican American creators to Worldcon76. Since then, I took the leap and went full into Fantasy.
My specialty are horses, but since studying with Donato, I've started to explore more storytelling in my art, with a personal series that my friends and audience have started calling "Gorgons". This is an ongoing series of paintings and drawings giving Medusa a personal life, with emotions other than fear and anger. These have been playful, but they hold a personal meaning after being inspired by my own journey through mental health improvement.
Most of my experience comes from private commissions and personal work. In 2019 I got my first freelance illustration job and I'm currently working on a 2 yr project with Llewellyn Worldwide illustrating a tarot deck.
- The Unbridled Spirit Tarot. Llewellyn Worldwide. Illustrating a full tarot deck inspired in equestrians and horses. Set to publish in 2024.
- Every Day Original and Beyond the Every Day galleries. Personal work. (Roster of 2020 to 2022)
- Mermaids Monthly. Cover for April 2021.
- A larger reality 2.0 A timeline in which we don't go extinct. Interior illustration.
- Dune Dragons. Middle grade chapter book. Created cover and interior illustrations.
As well as exhibitions and collective projects:
- The Woven Path Tarot. Guest Artist with the Changeling Artists Collective. 2022.
- Infinite Worlds: A journey to the fantastic. Exhibition by the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy artists (ASFA). Group show in Austin, TX. 2018.
Current projects involve personal work specially for Every Day Original, a participation in an anthology of Latinx artists for OSU Press in the *Latinographix series and a collaborative Halloween tarot deck with 78 tarot.
