Evening Showcase Artist
A. August Thompson
A. August Thompson has been a tattoo artist for 20 years, currently in Albuquerque New Mexico. After attaining a BFA in Studio Art from Henderson State University, he trained to and focused on tattooing. He has been blessed to work with and be influenced by many amazing artists/painters with a wide variety of artistic skills, styles, and specializations in the tattoo industry. Painting has always been a passion, artistic outlet, and escape from the commission based subject matter in the tattoo world. His goal for tattoos is to bring an oil painter's style to skin; over time also bringing a tattooer's style to painting.
August’s studio work is primarily influenced by the Fauvist, Surrealist, and Cubist movements; focusing on the communication of emotion through the use of a bold high-contrast color palette and compelling composition over realistic scenes or lighting. Subject matter while important is usually a secondary consideration behind color usage and placement. Many of his works are intended to evoke particular emotions, which he usually associates with the portrayed subject matter. While beginning his art journey preferring very large oil/mixed texturing materials on masonite, tattooing usually required working smaller. Most recent work is Oil on Canvas at 16x20".
